Who Pays for Hospice?

Who Pays for Hospice?

Hospice care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, the Department of Veterans Affairs, most private insurance plans, HMO’s, other managed care organizations and self-pay if uninsured/underinsured. Hospice covered benefits include care provided by an interdisciplinary team (including the doctor, nurses, social workers, hospice aides), costs for medical supplies and equipment such as a hospital bed, wheelchair, dressing supplies, etc. as well as medications for the relief of any symptoms related to the patient’s hospice diagnosis. The only hospice related expense not covered by Medicare and some private insurances is room and board if the patient is living in a nursing home or hospice residential facility – such as Hospice of Lenawee’s Hospice Home. This room and board cost is covered by Medicaid and some private insurances if the patient is insured. Upon referral, we will verify insurance benefits to determine coverage including any applicable deductibles and co-pays. If uninsured or underinsured, community contributions to the Hospice of Lenawee Hospice Heart Endowment allow us to ensure that no one goes without hospice care if they are unable to afford hospice costs not covered by insurance.
